Right to Food

Hunger in Uganda

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, unemployment and food insecurity soared. In 2021, millions of people turned to food reserves and community programs for help putting food on the table.

Who goes hungry?

Hunger can affect people from all walks of life. Many Ugandans are one job loss or medical crisis away from food insecurity – but some people, including children and seniors, may be at greater risk of hunger than others. Get the facts.

Hunger deprives our kids of more than just food. A child’s chance for a bright tomorrow starts with getting enough food to eat today.

After a lifetime of hard work, 63% of the households in Uganda with older adults (40+) find themselves facing an impossible choice — to buy groceries or medical care.

Hunger runs deep in the communities working hardest to feed us. Many rural and farm communities — the very places where crops are grown to feed the nation — face hunger.

What Causes Hunger?

The planet produces enough food to feed everyone on earth. Yet more than 3 billion people can’t afford to eat a healthy diet. Why? Interconnected issues of poverty, inequity, conflict, climate change, gender discrimination, and weak government and health systems all play a role in keeping nutritious food out of reach for millions of families around the world.

Main Issues Related to Hunger

Hunger is a feeling that can be different for everyone, but food insecurity actually measures the conditions that can lead to hunger.

For people facing hunger, poverty is just one issue. 10.1 million Ugandans struggle with hunger, the same as the number of people officially living in poverty.

Hunger and health are deeply connected. Healthy bodies and minds require nutritious meals at every age. Without enough and nutritious food, it can seriously impact one’s health.

Hunger threatens our nation’s future

Many people facing hunger are forced to make tough choices between buying food and medical bills, food and rent and/or food and transportation. This struggle goes beyond harming an individual family’s future, it can harm us all.

What is food insecurity?

Food security is a federal measure of a household’s ability to provide enough food for every person in the household to have an active, healthy life. Food insecurity is one way we can measure the risk of hunger. 1 in 8 people struggle with hunger in Uganda.
