OUR HISTORY

Since its founding in 1999, Food Rights Alliance (FRA) has been advancing the Human Right to Adequate Food for all and driven by a vision of: “A world free from hunger and malnutrition.” It aspires for a sustainable food system and food justice for all.
Our History

Food Rights Alliance is a non-profit organization that takes decisive action against the causes and effects of hunger.

Food Rights Alliance through its members, mobilizes and organizes communities for collective action to address the barriers to access safe and healthy diets while building their capacity to speak for themselves and advocating for an enabling environment to grow and access safe and nutritious food.

The 1990s marked the start of campaigns designed to educate the government and the Ugandan people about issues of hunger and approaches to relief and development. Such efforts led to a stronger advocacy focus at Food Rights Alliance, where staff members took on such issues as malnutrition, hunger relief and fair trade. An office was opened in Kampala, Namirenbe, in 1999, and the organization now invests in a popular campaigning infrastructure.

In 2019, Food Rights Alliance celebrated its 20th anniversary. Although the organization today is a very different place—one that has grown and changed to address both the times and the changing needs of the country—several things have remained steadfast: the commitment to addressing issues of hunger and malnutrition, and the set of core values that has informed our work—legacies passed down through two decades of staff and board members.

We save lives and build resilient communities

We save the lives of families. We are there for them before and after disaster strikes. We constantly search for more effective solutions, while sharing our knowledge and expertise with the world. We push for long-term change.

The goal of our strategic plan is “Sustainable Access and Consumption of Adequate Safe and Nutritious Food for All.” The broad focus is to secure spaces, mobilize voices and power of food producers and consumers to shape policy decisions.

Core Values Commitment

  • Food first, everything later: We are driven by a clear focus on eliminating hunger, in line with the country Zero Hunger strategy and SDG 2 (Zero Hunger).
  • Food Sovereignty: We promote the right to healthy, culturally acceptable food produced through ecologically sound and sustainable methods, and people’s right to define their own farming and food systems.
  • Food, the most precious and valuable item: We believe food should not go to loss and waste when some people are dying due to lack of it.

Food is important just as means of its production, handling and eating it are, going the extra mile to support sustainable agriculture, equitable access to productive resources and adaptation to climate change.
