Understanding Hunger and Food Security in Uganda

At Food Rights Alliance (FRA), we believe that evidence drives action. Our Hunger Metrics page provides insights into the state of food security, malnutrition, and access to adequate food across Uganda and the broader East African region.

These statistics help policymakers, advocates, and communities understand gaps, trends, and areas requiring urgent intervention. By making this data accessible, we empower stakeholders to create informed strategies to uphold the human Right to Adequate Food for All.

Key Hunger Metrics

1. Prevalence of Undernourishment

  • Over 20% of the population in Uganda experiences chronic undernourishment.
  1. Rural communities face higher risk due to limited access to diverse and nutritious foods.

2. Child Malnutrition

  • Stunting: 29% of children under 5 are stunted.
  • Wasting: 4% of children under 5 suffer from acute malnutrition.

  • Micronutrient Deficiency: Iron, vitamin A, and iodine deficiencies remain prevalent.

3. Food Insecurity by Region

  • Northern Uganda: Higher vulnerability due to post-conflict effects and climate shocks.

  • Eastern Uganda: Limited irrigation and reliance on rain-fed agriculture increase seasonal hunger.

  • Western & Central Uganda: Better food availability but pockets of urban food insecurity persist.

4. Access to Safe and Nutritious Food

  • Approximately 40% of households have limited access to safe, diverse, and nutrient-rich foods.

  • Market access, income inequality, and climate-related risks affect food availability and affordability.
