CSOs STATEMENT IN COMMEMORATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF AWARENESS OF FOOD LOSS AND WASTE

Theme: “Reducing food loss and waste: Taking Action to Transform Food Systems”

“The Dilemma of Food Loss and Waste in Uganda”;

Globally, over 931 million tonnes of food, accounting for 17% of the total food produced globally, is wasted each year in households, retail outlets, restaurants, or other food services. Food loss and waste greatly increase food insecurity and are major contributors to the climate change crisis, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution. Hence, the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) target to reduce global food waste at the retail and consumer levels as well as food losses along production and supply chains by half, by 2030.

Building on this momentum, stakeholders all over the world celebrate the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste on 29th September, every year. This year’s International Day is celebrated under the theme “Reducing food loss and waste:  Taking Action to Transform Food Systems” and comes at a time when the World has just undertaken a stocktaking moment of the food systems transformation agenda on a global scale. This day presents an opportunity for us, the underscored CSOs, to create national-scale awareness on the escalating challenge of food loss and waste and also call to action all stakeholders to prioritize actions geared toward reducing food loss and waste for better and more resilient food systems.
