Hunger Crisis

Hunger and Malnutrition

Hunger and Health are deeply connected. Healthy bodies and minds require nutritious meals at every age. Without enough and nutritious food, it can seriously impact one’s health.

Malnutrition

When people don’t have enough food or have to choose inexpensive foods with low-nutritional value, it can seriously impact their health. And once the cycle of poor diet and poor health begins, it can be hard to break.

Put simply, hunger’s toll can be life-altering. When someone is sick, having to choose between food and treatment can lead to serious complications. For example, for food-insecure adults living with diabetes, the choice between food and controlling the disease can even lead to complications like kidney disease, eye disease and nerve damage.

How hunger impacts on health in Uganda

Food insecurity can lead to Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and obesity.

More than half the communities reportedly have at least one member living with high blood pressure and more than one-third have a member with diabetes. Children at risk of hunger are more likely to be in poor health and struggle in school.

Did you know that

Family members in food-insecure households are also more likely to struggle with psychological and behavioral health issues.

In Katakwi, food shortage, child neglect (often as a result of separated couples, domestic violence, alcoholism and orphanage) and lack of education support were the highly ranked reasons by women. The men on the other hand highly ranked food shortage and lack of education support as the major reasons. Kids moving from one place to another in search for food and struggling to get enough to eat are more likely to have problems in school and other social situations.

Food Rights Alliance is helping to build good health foundation.

It has been evidently shown that among the social economic challenges, food shortage ranks highly and is an underlying cause of child trafficking and poor health.

When our communities — especially children — have access to healthy, well-balanced diets, everyone benefits. That’s the kind of future Food Rights Alliance is trying to create, but we can’t do it with your help.
